Physiotherapy Templestowe

Physiotherapy, a diverse healthcare field, is dedicated to improving and maintaining physical abilities for all ages, from children to adults. At our Templestowe clinic, physiotherapists deploy customised exercises, hands-on therapies, and advanced methods to diagnose and manage a wide array of physical issues, from adult chronic pains and musculoskeletal conditions to paediatric development challenges. Adopting an individualised approach, our specialists provide tailored interventions for diverse problems like sports injuries, persistent health complications, or developmental concerns in children. Through active collaboration, our therapists chart personalised roadmaps to assist patients in attaining their distinct physical objectives, fostering a more dynamic and fulfilling lifestyle.

Physiotherapy holds immense value for children's developmental journey, particularly for those facing disabilities. In the early years, physiotherapy is key to amplifying physical progression, fine-tuning coordination, and bolstering muscle vigour. Its contribution to correcting posture, enhancing mobility, and providing pain solutions is paramount, ensuring that every child can embrace the wonders of their growing phase fully.

For children with disabilities, the role of physiotherapy becomes even more pivotal. It offers customised therapeutic approaches that address their distinct needs, facilitating improved daily function and fostering self-sufficiency.

Furthermore, physiotherapy is vital in cultivating self-confidence, promoting social bonds, and enriching the broader quality of life for children. Whether it's guiding a child through the pivotal moments of walking or perfecting motor dexterity, paediatric physiotherapy is a linchpin in the all-round development of the young. Its comprehensive benefits underscore its importance in child healthcare and development.

FAQ

  • What is physiotherapy?
Physiotherapists are highly qualified health professionals who work collaboratively with their patients to prevent and treat a range of health conditions, injuries and injury vulnerabilities resulting from sport or exercise, and facilitate optimal movement and athletic performance. Using evidence-based hands-on techniques combined with prescribed exercises, physios are able to repair damage and reduce stiness and pain caused by sporting activities and exercise. Physiotherapy is also used as an integral component of rehabilitation after accidents to optimise recovery and quality of life. Our Soaring Health physiotherapists also work closely with GPs and other healthcare providers to plan and manage integrated treatment.
  • How can I get the most out of seeing a physio?
It is important to treat your physiotherapy program as a collaborative effort with your practitioner. One way you can optimise your treatment and hasten recovery is to consistently perform at-home exercises prescribed by your practitioner to complement techniques used in a treatment session. In conjunction with this, it is important to follow any self-management recommendations your practitioner makes, such as implementing changes to your exercise regimen or technique and avoiding certain types of movement or activities. Finally, make a point of becoming knowledgeable about your condition and keep any educational literature you’re given in sessions.
  • What does a typical physiotherapy session involve?
The specific nature of a session will be guided by your unique needs. However, the typical progression of a physiotherapy treatment program entails some or all of the following:

    • Assessing and diagnosing your condition and treatment needs
    • Working with you to establish realistic goals and measurable results
    • Developing a treatment or prevention plan that considers your lifestyle, sporting activities or exercise regimen, and general health
    • Prescription of at-home exercises, self-management strategies and physical aids if required
  • What can I expect during my first visit?
Initially, you can expect your physiotherapist to interview you about your current condition or injury, prior injuries or health issues, lifestyle, sports participation and goals, and general health. They may also review diagnostic items you have, such as x-rays or scans. This information will likely be complemented by a physical examination consisting of a number of tests. These may include posture assessment, joint palpation, muscle palpation, tests of muscle length/strength, measurement of joint movement and ligament stability and nerve function tests. Once they have a comprehensive picture of your condition and treatment needs, your practitioner will discuss your diagnosis and optimal treatment results, and, in conjunction with you, devise a realistic treatment plan. Your first session may also involve the commencement of hands-on techniques to reduce pain or movement limitations and facilitate better function.
  • Will I have to do ‘homework’?
Self-management is vital within a physiotherapy program, both to fast-track recovery and guard against recurrence or worsening of your injury or condition. Your physio will guide you through both at-home exercises and optimal postures and positions for lifestyle and/or sports activities and exercise, to optimise treatment and promote long-term wellness.
  • Is physiotherapy treatment subsidised?
Private health insurance members may claim instant health insurance rebates through hi-caps. In order to claim, you will need to bring your valid private health insurance card to your appointment. Otherwise you can claim online using your paid invoice.
  • What qualifications should I look for?
Practising physiotherapists in Australia must have completed a tertiary qualification in physiotherapy such as a Bachelor of Physiotherapy or Bachelor of Applied Science (Physiotherapy) from an institution accredited by the Australian Physiotherapy Council. By law, Australian physiotherapists must be registered with the Physiotherapy Board of Australia before they can practice. In addition, all registered physiotherapists must undertake 20 hours of Continued Professional Development (CPD) each year to ensure that they are familiar with the latest evidence and clinical best practice.
